Lauan is not sturdy enough. Plywood underlayment is installed under carpet, vinyl, laminate, and ceramic tile to provide a smooth, uniform surface. While vinyl flooring is known for its resiliency, it would be a major mistake to overlook the underlayment. Do not line up the second layer with joints in the first layer.
